Deus in adjutorium from Vespers of the Blessed Virgin for Brass Quintet and Organ (Monteverdi/arr. Marlatt)

Deus in adjutorium is the opening movement to the grand Vespers of the Blessed Virgin. Originally written for orchestra and a large choir, this powerful work was to be performed in a large church in Venice, perhaps even Saint Mark’s Cathedral. One Monteverdi scholar believes that this was written as a kind of “job interview” for a position as a composer in Venice. Transposed down into Bb concert, this piece can now be performed on Bb trumpets and the range has been lowered to alleviate any range extreme difficulties. For portability, a synthesiser with a good organ sound could suffice. Includes a score with organ and parts for 2 Bb trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba.
