The Intrepid is a piece that is aggressive in nature, designed to depict someone that is brave, therefore, a majority of the music is to be played bold and crisp. Melodies are relatively simple, using mainly the first six or seven notes taught in most method books. This piece is a good opportunity to teach articulations, dynamics, and some new rhythmic figures.

For a majority of the piece, notes are played slightly separated, especially during the opening measures. The contrasting section from measures 27-42 is to be played very soft and legato (as marked), giving the ensemble the opportunity to work on dynamic and articulation changes.
