The deep cup is engineered to provide substantial volume and depth of tone, particularly on lower middle register notes which can be critical on some instruments. As examples: notes played with the second and fourth valve where long lengths of cylindrical tubing are required. The diameter and length of the throat are optimized for good resistance, contributing to fast response and enhanced play-ability on the high register. The MB-50 combines a narrow and clearly defined rim with a deep rounded cup. This is ideal for all contrabass tubas: smooth in response and colorful in tone. The MB-50 works very well, particularly for the BBb tubas and the CC tubas, that are not too big. The MB-50 offers a unique combination and balance of desirable qualities.
This mouthpiece is not a direct carryover from the PT-50. The rim is more modern, the kind professionals like, the cup-shape and weight are different as above and in particular, the backbore is completely different. An American shank is standard but we also have some inventory with the larger Euro shank.
Cup Diameter: 33mm diameter.
Deep, pear shaped cup.
Rim: Width 7.5 mm.
Narrow rim with clearly defined inner edge.
Bore: 8.3 mm.

MB-50 mouthpiece
I have been on a mouthpiece safari for over two years after I purchased two new tubas, both with larger bores than what I had been using for many decades and I also had major dental work that left me in need of a better option to play on. Basically I needed to move to a larger diameter mouthpiece than what I had been using because of the dental situation. I have several Robert Tucci mouthpieces which I like very much, especially the heavy shell models, but I wasn't overall completely satisfied with how I was playing with them. Don't get me wrong they are excellent mouthpieces and I will continue to use them from time to time when the music and ensemble demand their characteristics, but I wanted something more too. After doing my research I selected the MB-50 mouthpiece from the Canadian Brass catalog. I have practiced with it for almost a full week since it arrived and I have used it within two distinctively different style ensembles and the response has been excellent. A third different ensemble is coming up soon too. The rim is more comfortable than the RT-50 due to its more modern shape/style. The inner edge is well defined and the articulation result (for me) has greatly improved. The overall range and interval jump ability is easy, clear and on-point when playing. Intonation with this mouthpiece is also more spot on then with some other mouthpieces. I am using less slide pulls and alternate fingerings. The sound is full, centered and the dynamics are very expressive from the whisper level to rattle the rafters. The overall sound is not as dark as my RT-48+ or my RT-50+ (heavy shells) which would be expected, but it is warm and full. I would strongly urge anyone to try this mouthpiece.
