Trombone Atrevido comes to enrich Achilles' continuing exploration of new musical dimensions for the trombone. Following his successful CD on Astor Piazzolla's music, "Tango Distinto", this new project submerses into the deep tropical landscape of Brazil and offers us one of it's most representative, complex and authemtically popular musical styles, the Choro.
Choro arose during the late nineteenth century in Brazil's famous musical mecca, Rio de Janeiro. While the Portuguese word "Choro" literally means "cry" or "lament", the pieces themselves tend to be bright, sunny, and generally upbeat, brimming with joy and hope.
Originally Choro was played by trios consisting of flute, guitar, and a small four-stringed instrument called the "cavaquinho". It's creators and interpreters were called "Choroes", but over time the Choro ensemble grew to include a diverse range of instruments, including the trombone. Like other popular musical styles that flourished from the profound sentiment of poor people (the Argentine Tango, the Greek Rembetiko or the American Ragtime), the Brazilian Choro is formally complex and highly composed.
