Canadian Brass MB-88 Tuba Mouthpiece

The MB-88 is an "adventurous" step in the same direction as the MB-50. This mouthpiece adds substantially to the low register of just about any CC or BBb tuba. Arnold Jacobs often had a truly large mouthpiece for those special occasions!

The MB-88 has a wide and deep cup, well-rounded toward the bottom. This is a mouthpiece for strong players, for those who desire a bold sound. The backbore is particularly open, to provide great weight and volume. It has been carefully calibrated to give the sound virility and power. The shell weight is moderate, to provide flexibility and response not normally associated with a truly large mouthpiece.

This mouthpiece is not a direct carryover of the PT-88. The rim is more modern, the kind that professionals like, and the cup-shape and weight are different as well as the backbore. If you like the PT-88 you will love the MB-88!

Cup diameter: 33.5 mm

Wide, deep cup.

Rim: 7.0mm with a slightly rounded inner edge.

Bore: 8.1 mm

    MB-88 Review

Posted by Craig S. Hodnett on 30th Jun 2022

I purchased the MB-88 mouthpiece as I wanted a larger mouthpiece than the MB-50 that I own. Both mouthpieces are excellent, full bodied with a rounded sound and edge. Comparing the two mouthpieces, the MB-50 gave me a more compact sound where the MB-88 gave me a larger, deeper, and heavier sound giving my tuba a much broader projection. This mouthpiece will really shine in a heavy symphonic orchestral work or in a large concert band when the bottom foundation really needs to support the entire ensemble. That being said I also discovered that both mouthpieces allowed me to fit in well when a more moderate, comfortable sectional balance was desired. No need to overblow, ever.
