Baroque Banquet; Stuart Laughton (Trumpet), Wendy Humphreys (Soprano) & William O'Meara (Organ)

Stuart Laughton is a celebrated trumpet player who was a founding member of Canadian Brass. He has held positions with the Hamilton Symphony, the Marlboro Festival and the Orchestre de la Scala Milano and has been a featured soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. William O’Meara was appointed organist at Ottawa’s largest church, Church of St. Joseph, at age fourteen. His enthusiasm and broad ranging repertoire have resulted in a unique and varied musical career as a concert organist. Together, they are joined by the soprano Wendy Humphreys and the baritone Daniel Lichti.

Notes on the music

A Baroque Banquet features works by Susato, Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Clarke and more.

Tylman Susato was active in Antwerp during the Renaissance and was known for his chansons, motets and dance music. He was also an important publisher of music, establishing the first music press in the Low Countries. Susato’s Renaissance Dance Suite was written for “like instruments” and features both elaborate and intimate dance movements. The Sonata for Two Trumpets, by Petronio Franceschini, is one of the earliest and most beautiful compositions from the renowned trumpet school that developed in Bologna in the 17th century. Probably the most famous work from the Baroque era featuring soprano and trumpet is the aria Let the Bright Seraphim from the oratorio Samson. It is the final climatic aria and was originally written for Christina Avoglio who premiered the aria in 1743 as well as Valentine Snow, whom Handel called “the finest trumpeter of the day.” It’s interesting to note that Handel also wrote the glorious trumpet parts of Messiah specifically with Snow in mind. The album concludes the famous The Prince of Denmark's March, commonly, though erroneously, known as the Trumpet Voluntary. It is a work by Jeremiah Clarke, composed around 1699. Clarke was the first organist of the then newly rebuilt St Paul's Cathedral. For many years, the piece was incorrectly attributed to his elder, and more widely-known, contemporary, Henry Purcell, who was organist of Westminster Abbey.
